A magnitude 5.9 earthquake has hit northeastern Afghanistan

The US Geological Survey is reporting that a magnitude 5.9 earthquake has hit northeastern Afghanistan near the border with Pakistan and Tajikistan.

The tremor struck 22 kilometres (14 miles) southwest of Ashkasham, 300 kilometres northeast of the Afghan capital Kabul, at a depth of 92.4 kilometres. There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

The quake, which occurred at 2.16am local time.The quake was felt across northern Afghanistan, northern Pakistan and in northern parts of India.
